Abitibi-Témiscamingue
What's the best way to describe
Abitibi-Témiscamingue? Endless forests and countless lakes
and waterways—in other words, immense spaces that are still
intact! Huge parks and lots of hunting/fishing outfitters,
wildlife reserves and nature centres mean nonstop outdoor
recreation. Two waves of migrants populated this immense
region, so far from major cities and barely one hundred
years old—first came the woodsmen, fur traders and
land-clearers, then the prospectors drawn by the gold rush.
Proud of its history, Abitibi-Témiscamingue is a dynamic
region with plenty for tourists to do, including museums,
mining tours and industrial tours.
Réserve faunique La
Vérendrye
At over 13,615 km², La
Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve is the second largest territory
managed by Sépaq (Société des établissements de plein air du
Québec) after the Lakes Albanel, Mistassini & Waconichi
Wildlife Reserve. Named in 1950 in honor of the explorer who
discovered the Rocky Mountains.
The reserve, which is
separated into two sectors (Abitibi-Témiscamingue and
Outaouais), impresses visitors with its vast wilderness
expanses and innumerable waterways, which include several
tributaries of the Ottawa River. The reserve's thousands of
lakes and rivers make it one of the richest fishing areas in
Québec, and a paradise for canoe camping with over 2,000 km
of circuits. Outdoor enthusiasts looking for an
out-of-the-ordinary experience will love this natural Eden
so close to civilization and yet so far removed. A vacation
in La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve will leave you feeling like
an explorer of nature at its untouched best.
