Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada

Lachine
Region:

Discover the many facets of a waterway that has helped shape the landscape of Montréal and neighbouring municipalities on the St. Lawrence. Inaugurated in 1825, the Lachine Canal was built in response to the need to bypass the rapids which hindered navigation, and therefore trade, on the St. Lawrence. Being a major part of the Montréal area's heritage, the Canal was Canada's main industrial centre for many years. The Lachine Canal is reopened to sailing since May, 2002.
