Réserve faunique Ashuapmushuan

La Doré
Region:
In former times, the Montagnais crisscrossed the Chibougamau area in search of pelts. There was a thriving fur trade between the native peoples of the north (James Bay) and south—and later with the whites. The area was popular for the quantity and quality of its furs. Numerous trading posts known as the King's Outposts were located along Lac Ashuapmushuan and the shores of Lac Nicabau. Today, this huge, 4,487 km² resource-rich territory still retains its unique flavor and is home to a wide variety of wildlife and natural resources. The Montagnais called it Ashuapmushuan, "the place where moose are seen."
With no fewer than 1,200 lakes, this wildlife reserve is a veritable paradise for sport fishermen. Speckled trout are found throughout the southern section of the reserve, whereas the northern lakes are home to walleye, pike, lake trout and whitefish. Visitors will also discover, among other things, Rivière Ashuapmushuan (over 200 km long), which is particularly well suited for canoeing and canoe camping. A trip to Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve is a trip into nature at its spectacular best.
