|At over 13,615 km², La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve is the second largest territory managed by Sépaq (Société des établissements de plein air du Québec) after the Lakes Albanel, Mistassini & Waconichi Wildlife Reserve. Named in 1950 in honor of the explorer who discovered the Rocky Mountains, La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve was once the fur trade territory of the Algonquin and the coureurs de bois, then home to lumberjacks, log drivers and raftsmen, who came to exploit the immense riches of the forests.
The reserve, which is separated into two sectors (Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Outaouais), impresses visitors with its vast wilderness expanses and innumerable waterways, which include several tributaries of the Ottawa River. The reserve's thousands of lakes and rivers make it one of the richest fishing areas in Québec, and a paradise for canoe camping with over 2,000 km of circuits. Outdoor enthusiasts looking for an out-of-the-ordinary experience will love this natural Eden so close to civilization and yet so far removed. A vacation in La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve will leave you feeling like an explorer of nature at its untouched best.
