The ultimate adventure above the 52nd parallel. In the austere setting of Baie-James and Nunavik, the land of the Cree and Inuit, the horizon stretches as far as the eye can see. The unfolding landscape is broken only by the occasional stunted conifer; a closer look reveals the tundra’s carpet of moss, flowers, shrubs and abundant lichen—the essential nutrients of the large cervidea that reigns supreme on this territory, the caribou.

A floatplane flies over a dozen lakes before arriving at the first trails that have belonged to caribou herds since time immemorial. Québec is home to over 750,000 caribou distributed between the Leaf River herd and the George River herd. These phenomenal cohorts move in columns in a constant circular migration that takes them across Québec’s High Arctic and Labrador.

Caribou hunters practise fine hunting techniques, from actively pursuing the animal to hunting from a hide. Given the environment and the relative abundance of game (when you’re hunting along a migratory route), approaching game is often an easy task. You can even choose your trophy and fire from a reasonable distance. Once you’ve reached your limit of two caribou, you can enjoy a photo safari and, in some cases, meet members of the Aboriginal community and learn about their fascinating way of life.

It is mandatory for non-residents interested in hunting north of the 52nd parallel to use the services of an outfitter. Accommodations are usually provided in a warm and welcoming satellite camp or a rustic forest camp. Certain packages include a guide on site who will do everything to make sure your dreams of adventure come true.
