The 38th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma
The Howls of She-wolves in the City
The pack has arrived in Montreal. She-wolves pace across the city canvas and cinephiles can rejoice in the celebration of cinema. If Kevin Costner danced with wolves, then Claude Chamberland, spiritual father of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, embraces them. His love of cinema has endured for 38 years. From October 7 to 18, keep your eyes on the screen, because the She-wolves have descended upon the city.Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma celebrates its 38th edition from October 7 to 18. This year, the Festival welcomes more than 250 films from 48 countries, proposing a schedule that is sure to satisfy all tastes, from novices, to children, to the most avid cinephiles hungry for discovery.
A menu designed for everyone that includes many North American and world premiers in all genres: full-length features, short films, fiction and documentary, retrospectives, tributes, professional gatherings, festive evenings, and special events. One keynote runs through the most original works to the most highly anticipated films: presenting the year’s best films. Eleven days of cinematic indulgence designed to showcase sentimental favourites, surprises, marquis names, and of course endless discoveries. The entire schedule for this 38th edition is designed as a lyrical gathering and an endless feast to be enjoyed in each section of the Festival:
International Selection: Louve d’Or
This year, the International Selection is the Festival highlight, thanks to the quality of works presented but also because of the $15,000 prize awarded to the winner of the Louve d’Or. Eighteen young filmmakers (directorial debuts and second or third films) will vie for this coveted prize, and the public will have an opportunity to discover powerful, incisive, and innovative filmmaking.
Special Presentation
Every year, renowned filmmakers from around the world jostle to enter this section and 2009 is no exception! Seventeen unique works will be premiered.
International Panorama
The International Panorama is a window on the world. Whether through fiction or documentary, these works transport us through time and space and expose us to world issues. This year 23 films have been selected. Plunge into the Panorama section and stay connected to global realities.
Wee Wolves
A she-wolf never leaves the den without her cubs! On the strength of last year’s first edition success, the Wee Wolves Film Camp got together this summer and gave about 30 children, aged 7 to 14 years, an opportunity to make a short collective film titled Lucky Charm (Porte-Bonheur). Not to be missed, the feature film The True Story of Puss'n Boots (La véritable histoire du chat botté), a fiction based on Charles Perrault’s timeless tale written nearly 300 years ago. Quality cinema for magical mornings! The showing scheduled on Saturday October 10, at 11 a.m. at the Imperial will be free for children aged 12 years and under.
FNC Lab: Experience the Future of Cinema
Festival headquarters this year are located at Agora Hydro-Québec in the Cœur des Sciences building at the UQAM campus. Every day from 5 p.m. until 3 a.m., the FNC Lab offers cutting-edge films absolutely free of charge for everyone!
