New in Abitibi-Témiscamingue

© Isabelle Tessier, parc national d'Opémican, SépaqThe rugged terrain of the southern Laurentians (the southwestern portion of the Canadian Shield) provides a magnificent setting for the new Parc national d’Opémican, which will showcase Lake Temiskaming and its remarkable cliffs—home to the peregrine falcon—as well as Rivière Kipawa, Pointe Opémican, Lac White and Île aux Fraises.

The park, slated to open officially in 2017, extends over an area of 252.5 km2 (97 sq. mi.). The forest cover, mainly pine, and the vestiges of Pointe Opémican, bear witness to the beginnings of the logging industry and the golden era of log driving.
