Dreams of Glass, dreams of Montreal
Glass? A common everyday sight, yet one that still has the power to enthrall. This extraordinary material is used all kinds of areas: from architecture to packaging, from tableware to decoration. As brilliant as gemstones, it glitters and brightens our lives with flashing rays of colour.
Through rare and valuable, unique and mundane objects, glass will sparkle in a world première exhibit display involving not only more than 25 Montréal museums, but also numerous art galleries. Close to twenty exhibits and ten temporary events, demonstrations, shows, performances, workshops and guided visits will take place from February to December 2010.
Montreal, City of Glass : A Tale of Innovation will burst into an explosion of colour at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal as the Louis C. Tiffany exhibit opens, displaying close to 160 works including a wide range of unique glass vases, a collection of lamps, a few paintings, mosaics, ceramics and jewellery. Along with this peerless master of glasswork, other Québec glasswork art pioneers, international greats and up-and-coming artists will be presented.
The project, an initiative of the
Board of Montréal Museum Directors, is produced in collaboration with a large number of Montréal institutions around the theme of glass to present the multiple facets of this common, yet fascinating, material.
