The Citadelle reveals its history

La Citadelle, © KEDLThe only French-language infantry regiment in the Regular Force of the Canadian Forces, the Royal 22e Régiment (a.k.a. the Van Doos) recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. To mark the occasion, on May 29 it inaugurated the Royal 22e Régiment Museum, which was founded in 1950 but has been entirely renovated and relocated to a new, much bigger space. Its huge collection, representing 300 years of Canadian military history, provides a unique historical perspective of the Citadelle of Québec, a star-shaped fortress built on Cap Diamant in the 19th century. With its new permanent, interactive “Je me souviens” exhibition and its temporary exhibitions, the Museum showcases the architecture of the Citadelle—a remarkable defensive structure once dubbed the “Gibraltar of North America.”
