The Carillon Canal, inaugurated in 1833, provided a route around the rapids on the Ottawa River, particularly those at Long Sault. Originally constructed for military reasons, the canal served commercial transport from the beginning. The impressive lock is more than 20 meters high and, today, boats can navigate the sharp drop in only 20 minutes. The same trip in the original canal system involved three canals and 11 locks. The site will delight both recreational boaters and hikers. Visitors can picnic in the charming park beside the old lock, relax out of doors or explore the adjacent hydro-electric dam. ©Parks Canada |
