In the middle of the St. Lawrence River, Grosse Île dominates the archipelago of L'Isle-aux-Grues. It was a quarantine station from 1832 to 1937 for the Port of Québec, the main entrance for immigrants to Canada until the First World War. In 1847, this location was the site of a tragic episode during which more than 5,000 immigrants, mostly from Ireland, were struck by typhoid fever. Inaccessible for such a long period of time, Grosse Île is now open to you.
