Location: Saint-Michel-des-Saints
The two distinct watersheds of the Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve confer on the region a character all its own. The Rouge River to the west-fast and furious in places, slow and lazy in others-and the winding and mysterious Matawin River to the east combine to offer outdoor enthusiasts the best of two worlds. Each river is home to a different species much prized by sports fishermen-speckled trout can be found in most of the lakes draining into the Rouge River, whereas the Matawin and its tributaries are literally teaming with northern pike. Although present in smaller numbers, lake trout, walleye and, occasionally, smallmouth bass are also found. The Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve was created in 1981 following changes giving it the northern section of Mont-Tremblant Park. It was established to promote wildlife and wildlife habitats while at the same time offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in an exceptional environment. Over 450 lakes and rivers, and mountains as high as 600 meters, make the Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. With the passage of the seasons, it generously reveals its secrets to all who come to discover its remarkable wealth of plant and animal life. ©Société des établissements de plein air du Québec
