Here is some critical information you should know before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle in Québec!

Driver’s licence and insurance

Most foreign driver’s licences are valid in Québec for stays of under six months. Beyond six months, an international driving permit is mandatory. Regardless of the length of your stay in Québec, if your driver’s licence is written in a language other than French or English, it is highly recommended that you obtain an international driving permit (you must apply for it in the country that issued your driver’s licence prior to your arrival in Québec).

In the event of bodily injuries resulting from an accident, drivers or passengers of vehicles registered in Québec are entitled to the same compensation from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (Québec’s automobile insurance corporation) as are Québec residents. If the vehicle involved in the accident is not registered in Québec, or if the visiting accident victims are pedestrians or cyclists, compensation will be based on the non-resident’s degree of responsibility. Note also that owners of vehicles driving on Québec roads must hold a liability insurance policy of at least $50,000 to cover potential property damage. For additional information, contact the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec.

Turning right on a red light

Right turn on a red lightTurning right on a red light has been authorized in Québec since 2003. However, it is not permitted at intersections where prohibitory signs are posted nor is it authorized on the island of Montréal

In places where it is permitted, the law requires that drivers come to a complete stop before turning and that they yield the way to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians that have already entered the intersection. Violators are subject to a fine ranging from $100 to $200 and could earn demerit points.
