I'd like to sleep in an igloo. Where can I do this?

Just a few decades ago, the Inuit of Nunavik spent their winter nights in igloos made from hand-cut blocks of snow or ice. These days, you can enjoy this unique experience in various regions of Québec in an igloo variant known as the “queenzy.” Basically, a queenzy is a man-made mound of snow with the inside hollowed out. The queenzy was originally made by Aboriginal peoples such as the Wendat and the Montagnais.

Below are some of the sites where you can spend a winter night in a shelter made of snow and enjoy a full slate of outdoor activities—an experience open to young and old alike:

Where can I find out more about spending the night in a tepee?

To find out about the sites that offer this type of accommodation, contact the Québec Aboriginal Tourism Corporation, the Federation of Québec Outfitters or the tourism association of the region you are planning to visit.

Is it possible to rent a room at Québec City's Château Frontenac?

Yes. In fact, the Château Frontenac is not a “château,” and never was: it has been a large, luxury hotel from the time it was built. A well-known symbol of Québec City, the hotel has welcomed famous folk for over a century, including King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, Charles de Gaulle and Alfred Hitchcock. To really soak up the hotel's historical atmosphere, take a tour led by costumed guides.

What is the difference between the suns and the stars in Québec's hotel classification?

The suns are used exclusively to classify bed and breakfast establishments, while the stars are used for hotels, tourist accommodations (houses, cottages and furnished apartments), vacation resorts, youth hostels and educational institutional residences. Hotel classification is the responsibility of the Corporation de l'industrie touristique du Québec (CITQ), which rates Québec's visitor accommodations based on strict criteria.

Is the accommodation tax refundable?

This tax is levied on visitor accommodations in certain regions and is $2 or $3 or 3% per night. It is not refundable. The tax is used exclusively to support tourism development in these areas. The GST and QST apply over and above this tax, which does not apply to campgrounds.
