Hermit crab

Hermit crab

A curious fellow indeed. This decapod (10-legged) crustacean has no shell of his own to protect him from predators, and has to salvage empty shells for shelter—or even a tin can in the event of a shell shortage. As the hermit crab grows, his shell becomes too small, which means moving into a bigger one . . . and sometimes evicting the current occupant to do so!
