Parc La Fontaine

Parc La Fontaine

Did you know that this park once belonged to the Department of National Defense? For some 30 years, it was used for military exercises. In 1908, the city leased the land for 99 years. It began landscaping what is now Parc La Fontaine, named for Louis-Hyppolyte La Fontaine (1807 1864), Prime MInister for Lower Canada (today Québec) in 1842 and 1848. The park was officially given to the City of Montréal in May 1992, the year marking the city’s 350th anniversary. It celebrated its 100th birthday in June 2001. In the summer, the Theatre de Verdure presents a wide-ranging cultural program, free of change, from film to dance to music in every genre—pop, classical and traditional.
