Charlevoix
Hillside heaven between sea and sky
From the white-capped peaks of Charlevoix, the view is divine. Time to hit the slopes!
For skiers, Charlevoix doesn’t just offer phenomenal snow conditions, with over 20 feet of fresh powder each year, it also serves up breathtaking views of the mighty St. Lawrence and surrounding landscape. From the peaks of Le Massif de Charlevoix (at 806 m / 2,645 ft., it’s the highest vertical drop east of the Canadian Rockies), swoop down to the banks of the river on any one of 53 runs. Park at the top of Québec’s only ski hill with summit access, or take the train to its base from Québec City or Baie Saint-Paul. Further east, Mont Grand-Fonds (735 m / 2,405 ft.) isn’t just a ski hill: it’s a family-friendly resort with an exciting range of activities. With 14 top-notch runs in a gorgeous setting, it’s popular among experts and beginners alike. Don’t miss the snow park with Big Air jumps, obstacles and rails: adrenaline rush guaranteed!
As for accommodations, the region has something for every taste and every budget, from modest alpine motels to village inns by way of five-star luxury digs—from the Fairmont Manoir Richelieu in Pointe-au-Pic to the Hôtel La Ferme in Baie-Saint-Paul. And fine dining is definitely on the menu, with a wide array of top-tier restaurants that put the accent on local flavours.
Outdoor enthusiasts and snow sports fans of every stripe will love the scenery—and the excellent visitor facilities. With picturesque villages, galleries, artists’ studios and craft shops galore, it’s no small wonder the Charlevoix region—a World Biosphere Reserve—ranks among the continent’s top winter destinations. The perfect way to round off your trip: a stop at the casino or one of the local spas. In a word: sublime!
