Originally practised by the Amerindians, ice fishing is enjoyed just about everywhere in Québec once the layer of ice covering our rivers and lakes is thick enough. To protect themselves from the wind—and thus pursue their pastime even longer—fishing enthusiasts operate from inside little huts set up on the ice during the winter months. Some of the most popular sites include the Saguenay fjord, and a group of lakes—Deux Montagnes, Champlain, Saint Pierre and Saint-Louis—that are part of the St. Lawrence River. Sainte Anne de la Pérade, near Trois-Rivières (Mauricie), is well known for its tomcod. In fact, each winter, from Christmas to early February, an entire village of huts appears on the ice of Rivière Sainte Anne, attracting thousands of fishers and curious onlookers.At the end of the line
The mostly commonly fished species are walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. In the Saguenay region, redfish, cod and black turbot are on the menu, and in the lakes dotting the Laurentian highlands, rainbow trout and brook trout are the catch of the day.
