Whether you choose to explore Québec’s bustling big cities or the wide variety of its vacation resorts, admire the majesty of the St. Lawrence River or venture into the great outdoors, you can help preserve its natural treasures and resources:

  • By finding out about the cultural values and practices of your destination;
  • By respecting the natural environment of the places you visit;
  • By choosing products that are reusable, durable and recyclable;
  • By choosing energy-efficient transportation (public transit, cycling, walking, etc.);
  • By disposing of recyclables and garbage in the areas provided;
  • By buying goods and services from companies that respect the environment;
  • By buying local products that promote the economic development of the region you visit;
  • By respecting the privacy and well-being of others;
  • By reducing pollutants generated by your trip;
  • By encouraging those around you to do the same.

Green hotels
Many hotels and hotel chains have taken steps to reduce the environmental impact of the constant stream of clients. The Association des hôteliers du Québec, for instance, offers its members a recognition program in sustainable development (Programme de reconnaissance en développement durable).

Québec inspires visitors concerned with sustainable tourism to take great initiatives. Here are a few of their experiences and thoughts on the matter.

I like to explore the local area, using local transportation and making sure my garbage is recyclable and disposed of. I am interested in local culture and try to converse as best I can in the local language. I like to take home a small locally made souvenir to remind me what a good time I had at that location.

My policy is to always take local public transportation. That's how you experience the way people travel and live, with the added benefit of using fewer resources in order to help the environment. You must experience the bus or truck or train or cart as part of your travels, and save our earth for the next generation.
R. Hall
I'm a child care provider, and we take several trips a year to enjoy the flora and fauna of our wondrous forests. The children are taught to leave the conservation areas in better shape than we found them. Our motto is when you know better, you do better. To help our nature friends, we don't mind picking up after someone else. Lots of people don't understand or know how harmful what humans leave behind can be to the forest and its animals.
W. Quarrington
When we travel, we always recycle everything in the appropriate disposal containers. We also choose to walk or cycle when sightseeing. Prior to each holiday, we map out an itinerary of all the historical and cultural places we wish to visit.
