Perfectly tailored to Québec’s rugged winters, the snowmobile will please anyone in search of escape and adventure. In the 1930s, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, the snowmobile’s inventor, probably had no idea of the important leisure role his caterpillar-track machine would come to play. Today, besides being the primary means of transportation for many Aboriginal peoples and a favourite among sportsmen and women, the snowmobile has become a hugely popular recreational vehicle. So popular, in fact, that Québec has created a network of trails to suit every taste, from weekend rider to die-hard enthusiast. Over 33,500 km (20,815 mi.) of groomed and signposted trails crisscross the province. Wherever the trails go, snowmobilers will find a full range of services close at hand, from fuel to rentals and repairs, heated shelters, food and accommodations.“Snow” me the way to go!
The regions of Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean can each boast some 3,500 km (2,175 mi.) of trails. Other regions popular for snowmobiling are the Outaouais, Laurentides and Lanaudière on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, and the Gaspésie, Chaudière-Appalaches and Montérégie on the river’s south shore. All of these regions offer up detailed trail maps.
