Whales are huge! They can weigh up to 135,000 kg.

Québec is one of the few places in the world with such a wide variety of cetaceans: no fewer than 13 species. Sometimes you can hear them breathing mere metres away—it’s an exhilarating experience that gives you a true sense of their size, strength and magnificence.

Seasons

Whales can be spotted from May to October when they are attracted to the St. Lawrence River’s wealth of edibles and impressive depth.

The blue whale is the largest animal to have ever existed on our planet.

How to whale watch

  • Whale watching from a cruise boat offers comfort and shelter (and washroom access), while zodiac excursions give you an even closer glimpse of these mammals. Warm clothing is recommended, even in summer.

  • Take to a kayak, slip into the stunning marine environment of the St. Lawrence River and breathe in the salt air. Stay alert for close encounters with curious seals or belugas.

  • The river is so deep that whales come right up to the river bank. You can watch them from the shores of the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, Les Bergeronnes, Les Escoumins, La pointe de l’Islet in Tadoussac and along the Whale Route (Route des Baleines).

  • Do whales really eat a lot? A visit to one of the specialized museums is well worth the trip for anyone curious about the world of whales and sea mammals.
