From the St. Lawrence River, the Route des Frontières runs to the United States and New Brunswick.

The Bas-Saint-Laurent region typically attracts visitors to sites along the river. This route takes you to a different spot, south of the region, bordering Maine and New Brunswick. Pohénégamook has a huge lake—where a creature called Ponik is supposed to live—and a magnificent beach.

Check out the official website for the complete route.

93 km

This circuit mainly covers the Pohénégamook area. There’s little driving to do as you’ll spend one day at the beach and the other in a park.

Day 1

Pohénégamook... beach, freshwater resort

Pohénégamook municipal beach

It’s not a beach by the sea, but it seems like it, minus the salt water. Lac Pohénégamook has one of Québec’s top ten beaches, with close to 1 km of fine sand as well as water games. Anyone for volleyball or zip lining?

Day 2

One foot in Canada, the other in the United States

Parc de la Frontière

This park touches the Québec, New Brunswick and United States borders around the lake. On the 3 Bondaries Trails, panels explain how bootlegging was carried out during the Prohibition era in the United States.

La Vieille Gare de Rivière-Bleue

About fifteen minutes from Pohénégamook, the Vieille Gare de Rivière-Bleue is a heritage building that recalls the golden era of the railways as well as the time when bootleggers smuggled alcohol to the United States during the Prohibition era.
