Camping on an island: our tips for a well-prepared adventure

Those big, developed islands that you can reach by car are all well and good, but there’s nothing like an adventure in wild and (largely) unexplored regions! But since exploration goes hand in hand with preparation, here are some tips to ensure that your camping trip is an epic success.

Québec Adventure Outdoor, a platform dedicated to planning outdoor trips and excursions in Québec, sets out four golden rules to make the most of the experience and avoid unpleasant surprises.

1. Planning

Where are we going? For how long? When? These questions are inevitable for any trip, and camping trips are no exception! When going camping on a remote or isolated island, you should also consider whether everyone taking part in the expedition is physically fit enough to enjoy it. After all, rowing a distance of 15 km can be exhausting!

2. Before you leave

Even simple things like checking the weather forecast are crucial when setting off on an adventure. Has it rained a lot recently? That could have a significant impact on the flow of a river, for example. And even if Mother Nature seems to be in a good mood, always tell someone close to you about your plans.

3. Equipment in good condition

Before you leave, it’s important to go to your garage, basement or shed and make sure that you have everything you need and that all your equipment is in good condition. Don’t run out and buy the equipment you need on the very morning of your departure! Waterproof bags, maps, a GPS or compass, survival items and suitable clothing are just some of the things you’ll need for a successful trip.

4. Regulations and the environment

All right, your equipment is ready to go. But what about licences? For example, a fishing licence. And have you considered the plants and animals whose home you’ll be visiting? Waste management may take some effort and additional equipment. Protecting the natural environment and reducing our impact on it will ensure that we can continue to enjoy it for a long time to come!
