Immersive and transformative journeys into the heart of Indigenous cultures
Whether you’re looking for culture, adventure, large gatherings or a rejuvenating experience, Indigenous tourism offers a multitude of experiences. Thirsty for authenticity? Head to the vast regions of Nunavik and Eeyou Istchee Baie-James for a full immersion into the Inuit and Eeyou cultures.
Destination: Nunavik
A land of extremes and natural wonders Nunavik spans half a million km2. Home to 14 Inuit communities, this region boasts four of Québec’s most impressive national parks.
In the northern part of the region, Parc national des Pingualuit is renowned for its meteor crater, resembling a perfectly round crystal eye in the middle of the tundra. Parc national Kuururjuaq is home to the Monts Torngat, Québec’s highest peaks. In the sprawling Parc national Tursujuq, visitors discover inland seas lined with cuestas and vestiges of a millennium of human occupation. Lastly, Parc national Ulittaniujalik, another jewel of the Far North, is criss-crossed by the Rivière George and topped by the emblematic Pic Pyramide. There are so many natural treasures just waiting to be discovered above the 55th parallel!
A larger-than-life experience
Ungava Polar Eco-Tours, an Indigenous-owned company, offers you a unique adventure around the Gyrfalcon islands in Ungava Bay, off the coast of the community of Tasiujaq. Take an immersive journey to this remote and breathtakingly beautiful area, which boasts Arctic landscapes and wildlife, views of the Northern Lights and authentic encounters with Inuit guides and their traditions.
How to get there
Inaccessible by road, Nunavik can only be reached by air. Air Inuit is the main airline serving the communities of Nunavik. You can also work with a tour company to plan a customized stay in the region.
Destination: Eeyou Istchee Baie-James
Representing one-fifth of Québec’s territory, Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is also home to the province’s largest freshwater reserve—a true paradise for fishing enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors.
In the Lac Waconichi area, the Corporation Nibiischii – Réserve faunique des Lacs-Albanel-Mistassini-et-Waconichi invites you to explore this “Land of Water” with a range of packages combining fishing and lodging (cottages or campsites). For an unforgettable experience, paddle to the Mwakw floating cabins in Baie Cliff, where you’ll be lulled by the lapping of the waves, with the cliffs and peace and quiet of lac Waconichi as a backdrop.
For its part, the Wiinipaakw Tours Solidarity Cooperative offers northern expeditions to adventurous souls looking to discover James Bay and the Eeyou Istchee region. Aboard these unique cruises, you’ll explore a territory that few visitors have ever had the chance to take in. A journey through mysterious islands and majestic landscapes filled with bear, beluga and caribou sightings awaits!
Can’t swing a getaway north of the 49th parallel this summer? Stop by the Wachiya Store in the Old Port of Montréal, an inspiring showcase of authentic Cree arts and crafts from Eeyou Istchee Baie-James. The community-owned and operated social enterprise also offers creations by Eeyou artists through its online store.
