Was adventure calling, so you headed out on a road trip to explore Québec? Whether you’ve got a with a trunk full of luggage and your kids singing in the back seat or you’re travelling solo in search of new horizons, you’ll quickly realize (or remember) how vast Québec is. Fortunately, there are Villages-relais along your route! They’re the perfect stop to use the washroom or fill up on gas, as well as take a breather, have a bite to eat and explore. Here’s everything you need to know to plan one or more stops!
What is a Village-relais?
The unsung heroes of road trips, a Village-relais, is so much more than a rest stop. It’s a municipality that meets three key criteria: It has a population of at least 10,000 residents, is located along a national or regional roadway or an official tourist route, and is at least 40 km from a municipality with 20,000 or more residents and at least 80 km from any other municipality that is recognized as a Village-relais.
To be recognized as a “Village-relais,” it must offer travellers a range of essential, safe and pleasant services. Of course, there are public washrooms and gas stations, but there is also food, secure parking for all types of vehicles, access to a phone or Wi-Fi zone and a charging station for electric vehicles. Several of them go further and offer food service, lodging, mechanical assistance tourist information, and sometimes even a dog park or laundry facilities. All of this is provided in a welcoming and often picturesque setting that is proud of its roots. Not only that, but they boast tourist, cultural and natural attractions that will make you want to extend your stay.
More comprehensive than rest stops or service areas, Villages-relais play a broader role. They improve safety for road users, particularly by filling service gaps, or sections of the road that don’t have any safe places to stop. They enable travellers to find stops at regular intervals (approximately every hour of driving) on Québec’s main highways and help promote regional tourism and local development.
Where are they?

Useful tips for successful “Villages-relais” stops
Because it’s great to have a little fun while staying organized!
- Look for the “Village-relais” sign before you collapse from exhaustion: The interactive map will come in handy! Add to your favorites.
- Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time: Don’t just stop off to fill your tank. Give yourself 30 to 60 minutes to stretch your legs, grab a coffee and get some fresh air. It can make all the difference!
- Check for basic services: Some rest stops have limited parking or maximum time limits (for example, some municipalities only allow stops for up to 4 hours).
- Start your “collection” of Villages-relais: Check off the places you see, such as Coaticook or La Guadeloupe. You can even turn it into a road trip game (or a fierce competition with a couple of friends)!
- Take a photo of the “Village-relais” sign (a nice souvenir) and something unique in the village (such as a covered bridge, a church or a local microbrewery).
- If you’re travelling in a recreational vehicle, some Villages-relais offer facilities or parking for the night, but not all of them. The specific features of each are clearly stated in their description.
- Are you looking for something more specific, such as parking for heavy vehicles, an area for agritourism or a place to empty your RV’s wastewater tank? Take a look at the trip planning section of the Fédération des Villages-relais du Québec.
- But above all, leave room for surprises. Charm and authenticity are often found in unexpected details and can make all the difference.
Have a great trip!
