Matane is the gateway to Gaspésie, and its name comes from a Mi’kmaq word for “beaver pond.”
Matane’s downtown is a blend of vibrant city life, nature, salt air off the St. Lawrence, parks and authentic reserves. In the wide-open spaces of the Matane wildlife reserve, you can easily spot moose! There is an abundant population of them in this corner of the country.
